This coin = M&M Auction 52 (Basel, 19 Jun 1975), Lot 264 (from the anonymous private collection of 24 "Monnaies de la Collection d'Este"), which lists some its extensive publication history. E.g., illustrated by line drawings in Lieb (1730), Gotha Nummaria, p. 28 & in (1734) Thessarus Morellianus, Cestia 2 (Cestia 1 also illustrated w/ an Este Aquiletta); cited in Bahrfeldt (1923), p. 43, ex. 26, and earlier works by Calcagnini and Cavedoni; among, of course, many others. This photo reproduced also in Pancotti & Grimaldi, p. 351, in (2015) Si tiene pegno in Guardaroba... (which also reproduces the Calcagnini manuscript describing this coin, p. 15 [17], no. 13).

Correction: This coin was published in Hans von Aulock's Phrygiens (vol. 1), but it was not part of his own collection (i.e., SNG von Aulock). (He did own a different coin of this type: Phrygiens 1, 831 = SNG von Aulock 3906 = Franke KZR 154.)

Between 1914 (Prowe sale, illustrated on Tafel XXIX) and 1984 (Brand VII sale, ill. on Plate IX), the present coin was owned by Virgil Brand and his heirs, leaving no opportunity for von Aulock (1906-1980) to have owned it.

Correction: This coin was never in the collection of Hans von Aulock. The coins in his Lykaoniens publication, aside from those cited to SNG von Aulock, were not his own. (This coin was in the possession of Virgil Brand and Virgil Brand's heirs for nearly the entirely of von Aulock's life, from the 1914 Prowe Egger sale until the 1984 Brand VII sale, plated in both.)

Also ex collection of Gottlieb Wüthrich (1879-1946), and plate coin is his 1945 Numismatic Chronicle article, "Celtic Numismatics in Switzerland" (this coin described on p. 22, No. 44 & illustrated on pl. II, 16).

The collection was sold over many sales by Münzen und Medaillen, Basel, beginning with the largest portion in Auction 47 (30 Nov 1972) and continuing in FPLs into the 1980s. While Wüthrich's Auction 47 coins were well-cataloged, the later FPLs generally did not mention his collection or article, and provided fewer illustrations. Thus, the Wüthrich provenance can be challenging to track.

Correction: This coin could not have been in the collection of Virgil Brand (1862-1926). Lockett (1873-1950) bought this coin from the 1921 Pozzi sale (as recorded in his purchase notebooks & published sources), owning it until his death. Glendining sold it in 1961. (It took years to sell Lockett’s full collection; that was Part XII.)

The error was introduced in 2019: The cataloger of Triton XXII (CNG, 2019) apparently believed that the coin was sold anonymously from the Brand Collection/Estate at Hess-Leu 31 in 1966. (Some such coins were sold by Hess-Leu, but not this one, which had been in Lockett’s possession for decades after Brand died.) No other source had associated this coin with Brand.

Note: Lockett could have owned coins from parcels of Brand Estate coins sold to British dealers beginning in 1935 (e.g., reputedly, gold coins from Glendining, May 1936). Brand was also a buyer (via Hirsch) from the Pozzi sale (though to a lesser extent than Lockett). Thus, one cannot rule out the possibility that one or more coins were in all three collections (none are yet known, to my knowledge). In this case, however, there seems to be no evidence for it, while there is strong evidence against it (i.e., Lockett’s purchase notebook with stamped Pozzi ticket; the impossibility of entering the Brand Collection after Lockett's).

Correction: This coin was NOT in the collection of Virgil Brand (1862-1926). While some of Brand's coins were anonymously sold in Hess-Leu 31 (1966) and other sales of the 1960s, he had been dead for nearly 35 years when Glendining (1961) sold it from the collection of R.C. Lockett, who was they buyer at the 1921 Pozzi sale (as confirmed by Lockett's purchase notebook, in which this coin, like many of his others, was accompanied by a stamped Pozzi sale ticket; RCL #47, Greek AR 9).

This coin's preceding sale (Nomos FPL 4 in 2011) referenced Hess-Leu 31 in 1966, but not name Virgil Brand, so the error was apparently first introduced here, in Triton XXII (but was repeated in a 2026 NAC sale).
