This coin, sold for US 21'000 on 5 January 2014 (€. 15'500), subsequently realized €. 27'000 on 3 July 2014 as lot 3248 at Künker auction 251. (+75% over 6 months, + 206% on a yearly basis).

This coins is probably a modern forgery. Several die-identical pieces have been offered on Ebay in 2013 and 2014 - often by known "fake-sellers". The Ebay examples have usually fetched prices between USD 400 and 800.

This very same coin had been auctioned at Auction V Numismatica Genevensis as lot 458 on December 1, 2008 and officially sold for 7'000 CHF.
It was auctioned again at Auction 163 Künker as lot 87 on January 28, 2010 and officially sold for 4'400 euros (6'500 CHF at the rate of that day).

What appears to be exactly this same coin is being auctioned on August 2, 2014 at CNG/St. James's in Chicago amid the Lissner collection. The intense marketing around such an event prompted the grading to raise from “almost extremely fine” to “mint state” and its estimate from 1,500 GBP to $ 10,000.
Grading is a matter of personal opinion, good faith of course is not questioned, and prices are determined by the market, but I wonder whether labels and commercials, rather than coins, are sometimes offered.

The has been stolen from me in 2001. It reappeared in the INumis auction in 2013 and has now been returned to me.
