Provenance in error: NOT ex Boston MFA 980 = Warren 761, ex Greenwell = Sotheby's 11 Jul 1899, 98. The BMFA coin was sold at the deaccession sale by Numismatic Fine Arts: NFA VIII (6 Jun 1980), Lot 146 (and weighed 0.3g less, 5.66-5.67g depending on the publication). The present coin was sold by the same firm four months later (no prior provenance): NFA Auction IX, Lot 199 (5.97g). Aside from NFA IX, the remainder of the provenance reported in Triton IX is mistaken. (Nor is this coin found elsewhere in the Warren et al. catalogs.)

This coin = Antioch Associates (H.C. Lindgren) BBS 41 (10 Oct 2002), Lot 165.

(RBW marked this lot in pencil on his copy of BBS 41 but apparently did not buy it. Or someone else got to it first!)

This coin = Antioch Associates (H.C. Lindgren) BBS 41 (10 Oct 2002), Lot 163.

Note: The obv. photograph to BBS 41 was poorly trimmed, resulting in loss of the obv. beyond the border of dots (7h-9h). Back then, of course, Lindgren and/or his associate Isabelle Pafford were cropping the photos with scissors not software!

Da "PF" nicht Göbl 49d, sondern Göbl 75c (56 Ex)
Comme "PF" Göbl 49d est faux, Göbl 75c (56 ex) est correcte.

Miscatalogued: The obverse is Liber wearing ivy-wreath, not Apollo, so it's RRC 449/2. However, the reverse legend ordered in a straight line is a variety not recorded by Crawford, who nevertheless made the distinction for RRC 449/1 (a [curved line] & b-c [straight line]). Correction: not a Jacob Hirsch ticket, but a blue Spink ticket in George Muller's hand (dated Oct 1978).

Leu Numismatic has commented the following on this coin under lot 113 / Auction 19 : The series continued the following year (RY 27 = 75/6 CE; RPC II 2284), though on smaller flans and with simpler busts lacking the rich drapery and cuirass seen here. In 2015 a second specimen of the RY 26 medallion appeared at Classical Numismatic Group 99 (13 May 2015, lot 500), but this is clearly a cast forgery: the details are blurred, and its weight of 19.79 g is far too low - even lighter than the flans of the later, reduced issue. Whether that forgery was based on a genuine but unpublished host coin remains uncertain. The crude reverse, in any case, suggests heavy tooling, whether on an original model or in the casting mould itself."

The coin was sold previously by Jean Elsen & ses Fils Auction 108 - Lot 1028. It had the following description "BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold Ier (1831-1865), 40 francs, 1834, Refrappe en bronze clair. Tranche lisse. Ref.: Bogaert, 68B4. Rare. Petites taches."
