Drachm (Silver, 4.06g 8), early 2nd century B.C. Head right, wearing a diadem in the form of a helmet visor but with wavy hair above; to right, geometrical ornament. Rev. ROMA VIII Head of bridled horse to right. Lanz–. Paulsen pl. 8, 183-187. SLM–. W.–.Extremely rare. Toned. Very fine.
This exceptionally rare coin copies a Romano-Campanian didrachm of the 3rd century, but turns the helmeted head of Mars on the prototype into a male head wearing what looks like a modern sun visor! Coins of this type have been found from northern Italy to Bohemia (cf. Allen-Nash p. 63).
